Is Retained Ownership of Calves a Good Option this Fall?
Tune in this week for a discussion between Dana Zook and NE Extension Ag Economist Scott Clawson about retaining of ownership of calves on this farm. Without a solid grazing option of wheat pasture, many producers are weighing the decision of sell vs. retain on their fall calves. Tune in for a breakdown of this thought process.

Improving the lives of Oklahomans with ONE Health
This week I am excited to share a conversation I had with Dr. Rosslyn Biggs and Dr. Jared Taylor in the spring. The idea of One Health can seem complicated at first but at it’s core, its really just taking a closer look at the health of the people of our state. OSU has taken a strong stand in using the idea of ONE Health to improve the lives of all Oklahoman’s. By understanding that all aspects of health (animal, human, plant, environment, etc.) are connected, we may be able to come together to solve some of the biggest problems in our society. Its a cause that I think we can all get behind. This is an excellent conversation. Enjoy.

Back to the Basics of Bovine Respiratory Disease with Dr. Jared Taylor
This week we continue our partnership with the College of Veterinary Medicine as I have a discussion with Dr. Jared Taylor about bovine respiratory disease . This disease complex is one very common to every beef producer in the industry. Dr. Taylor is an Associate Professor and Veterinarian with the Oklahoma State College of Veterinary Medicine.

Cattle Lameness with Dr. Meredyth Jones
This week, we return to our series at the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine for a discussion with Dr. Meredyth Jones about lameness in beef cattle. Many producers are comfortable treating what they assume is foot rot, however there are many different issues that cause lameness that are not foot rot. Many of these other things will not respond to treatment like a foot rot case would.
Dr. Jones has provided some pictures below to give you an idea of what foot rot IS NOT. Remember foot rot will cause pretty even swelling on both sides and all the way around the foot. If the swelling is just on one side of the foot, your animal is experiencing something else and should not be treated for foot rot before consulting a veterinarian.

Big Changes to OTC Antibiotics after June 11th
This week Dana speaks with Dr. Barry Whitworth about how over the counter antibiotics are not going to be available after June 11th, 2023. After this time, all antibiotics will require a prescription from a licensed veterinarian. Producers who haven’t consistently used a veterinarian in the past will need to establish a working relationship with a veterinarian. The formal relationship is called a Veterinary-Client-Patient-Relationship (VCPR).

Many in the agriculture industry may wonder why these new rules are being instituted. The development of antimicrobial drug resistance in human medicine is a serious public health concern. For this reason, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) promotes the judicious use of antimicrobial drugs in human medicine (CDC, 2021). As well as promoting the judicious use of antibiotics in human medicine, the FDA also promotes the judicious use of antibiotics in animals. The Guidance for the Industry # 209 (GFI #209) outlines the FDA’s thoughts on how to use antimicrobial drugs in food/animals in a judicious way. Two concepts of GFI #209 are that antimicrobial drugs should only be used for animal health and that these drugs should be used under veterinary supervision.

Local Butcher Shop; a Meat Lovers Dream
This week Dana speaks with Eldon Campbell, Garfield County Native, former 4H’er and OSU Graduate about his journey to becoming part owner of the small business called T&C Meats in Enid, OK. T&C Meats, a small local butcher shop that opened in 2017, has been a huge success selling prime steaks, premium ground beef, and high quality pork and chicken products.
With the assistance of a CARES act grant from the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Eldon and his partners are constructing a meat processing plant in Enid, called Chisholm Trail Meats that will open Spring of 2023. This new facility will have the capacity to handle 50 head of beef a week (in addition to some pork and lamb) and fill the local need of custom processing. This plant will also have the ability to inspect and label meat products bound for farmers markets, restaurants and retail sale.

Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDv) – A Real Life Story Part 1
The week we start a 3 part series on BVDv and the impact on a local cattle herd. Part of the shipping fever pneumonia complex, this disease is wide reaching and impacts to the US cattle herd are significant. Think this doesn’t apply to you? Think again…this disease eludes producers with Persistently Infected (PI) animals. Often, these PI animals don’t show symptoms of the infection and can infect whole herds.
