Cattle Lameness with Dr. Meredyth Jones
This week, we return to our series at the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine for a discussion with Dr. Meredyth Jones about lameness in beef cattle. Many producers are comfortable treating what they assume is foot rot, however there are many different issues that cause lameness that are not foot rot. Many of these other things will not respond to treatment like a foot rot case would.
Dr. Jones has provided some pictures below to give you an idea of what foot rot IS NOT. Remember foot rot will cause pretty even swelling on both sides and all the way around the foot. If the swelling is just on one side of the foot, your animal is experiencing something else and should not be treated for foot rot before consulting a veterinarian.
The xray shows an infected coffin joint which is commonly mistaken for foot rot because it causes swelling. It is much more severe than foot rot.
This is an picture of a sole ulcer, which is commonly mistaken for foot rot. It does not respond to antibiotics like foot rot does. The green block is called a hoof block. It’s a little shoe we put on the normal toe. It allows them to walk up off the ground so that the painful toe doesn’t hit the ground when they walk and it really helps with pain. It comes off when they are healed up.
